Germany

Introduction:

In Germany two health insurance systems are on the market. Appr. 90 % of the population are covered in the statutory system. These persons may take out supplementary coverage in the private sector. The appr. 10 % who are fully covered in the private health insurance sector have to fulfil certain conditions to be allowed to be covered, such as a certain income. The insurance plans in the private sector are based on the individual age and risk, thus for each person separately. In the statutory system the monthly premium is based on the income of the insureds. Family members may be co-insured without paying extra.
